'Bricked ' 

"Bricked offers a unique CS: GO experience. Fast paced action in a close-quarters environment. Put your gun-play skills to the test in 2v2 PvP & AI Deathmatchs."

Level Description

​

Bricked is a small-sized map, designed for a 2v2 round-based deathmatches. It has a symmetrical design as to not disadvantage either team. Overall cover throughout is limited to focus players attention towards reaction times and equipment utilisation. The main focus of this map is to build and improve gun-play skills.  

Project Overview

​

For my project, I designed and developed a 2v2 team deathmatch level. This level is based around a fast-paced style of gameplay that is round based. It is simplistic and compact in its design, with limited available cover forces players to rely on their skills and strategies. The main focal point of my project is to see how this style of level design and gameplay can be implemented into the established game of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Design Decisions

​

A key focal point of my level being fast-paced and simplistic meant that I had to have clear routes of flow, with the limited fastidiously placed cover that allows players to focus entirely upon their tactics and reactions.

​

CS: GO's skill curve is a lot great than many other FPS games in regards to gunplay skills. For new players, this can be very challenging to the point of being off-putting when coupled with its competitive style. This is something I came to realise during development. Understanding this allowed me to make design decisions to focus on both types of players. 

​

I wanted the level to be competitive for players of a higher skill base but enjoyable for players that want to learn and better their gunplay skills. To do so the level was designed with Player vs Player and Player vs Bots in mind. A new player could work their way up through the bot difficulty levels until they felt they could test themselves against other players. As well as improving their gunplay skills they could also learn how to use cover and tactical equipment effectively.

Project Reflection

 

I am delighted with the finished result of the level. I believe it achieves what my design intentions were for it, the focus of gun-play and tactics. Through its simplistic layout and design, it allows players to focus their attention on pitching their skills against others in PvP matches. During development, there was a shift in what was the primary focus of the level's purpose, from a simple 2v2 style map to building and improving the gun-play skills of beginners. Through its simplicity, it helped new players to adjust and understand PvP within CS: GO.

After such a success with the initial beginners playtest it became very apparent the benefits of such a level in CS: GO. A level to bridge the gap between a new player with no gunplay skill and a proficient player with a base skill level of all weapons and equipment that can be applied to all other game modes and maps.
